Day out with Cory: Recyling and waste management

Service Manager Sharon Read was recently asked as a supplier for Cory to complete a survey to do with sustainability.

Cory is a recycling and waste management company that ensure London has a safe, clean, and sustainable way of managing its recyclable and non-recyclable waste. They have a few sites that they collect waste from along the Thames, Wandsworth, Battersea, Walbrook, Charlton, Belvedere & Tilbury to name a few. They receive around 750,000 tons of non-recyclable waste every year.

As part of the survey, Sharon was put into a prize draw to go out with our client on the boat to see what they do. Sharon met up with Helen Murphy (head of sustainability) and Phil Broszek (Cory contact on site at Belvedere). They met up at Charlton and were taken out onto one of the tugs, wearing a hard hat, hi-vis, and life vest – they take health & safety very seriously!

Sharon thoroughly enjoyed her day out with Cory on the Thames, she says:

“This experience was very interesting for me personally as I live close by to their depot that completes recycling and waste management for not just our borough but also for a lot of London.

The skipper Gary and his crew were all very welcoming and walked us through what they would be doing over the day, we collected barges full of containers that were empty to be dropped off at different points, and to collect three full barges to be dropped back for processing at the plant in Belvedere.

I can understand why they enjoy the views and would not want to give this up for a desk job! Both Helen and I were both asked to take the helm, which was great fun.”
